NYWC FAQ

WHAT IS NYWC?

The National Youth Workers Convention (NYWC) is a gathering of people from all around the country (and the world!) who work with and care about teenagers. It’s an opportunity for you and your team to get equipped, be inspired and encouraged, do some bonding and team building, and have fun!

WHO RUNS NYWC?

Youth Specialties (YS), a ministry of Real Resources, creates and produces the National Youth Workers Convention, and has done so for more than 45 years. Youth Specialties has been training and equipping youth workers since the 1960s, and is solely devoted to helping people who care about teenagers find effective ways to minister to them in any context.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT NYWC?

You can expect opportunities to get what you need most. We design the event to offer you as many choices as possible, allowing you to fill your schedule as much or as little as you’d like. Some attendees will try to attend every seminar and session possible. And some will use the time to rest, pray, reflect and network.

WHAT KIND OF TRAINING WILL MY TEAM AND I GET?

We offer more than 80 practical training seminars led by youth ministry veterans, professors and in-the-trenches practitioners who take the time to interact with attendees and answer questions specific to your ministry. We also provide tracks, which allow you to focus your learning. Intensives dive a bit deeper into topics on the forefront of youth ministry. Plus, you’ll soak up learning in Big Room and in the conversations you have every day with your peers. Whether you’re new to ministry or you’re a seasoned veteran, you’ll find something that will challenge you or teach you something new.

WILL I BE ABLE TO FIND TIME AND SPACE FOR REST AND REFRESHMENT OF MY SOUL?

We know that people who are passionately serving in ministry often neglect to refuel themselves. You’ll find places for you to care for your soul, whether you spend time in our prayer chapel, visit our Sanctuary, or meet with a spiritual director. You’ll also experience times of worship during our Big Room sessions, where you get to actually participate (instead of planning or leading it)!

WHAT KINDS OF TOOLS AND RESOURCES WILL WE FIND AT NYWC?

The YS Store is stocked with books, curriculum and videos that are designed to make it easier for you to do ministry with teenagers. The store staff is always on hand to help you find exactly what you need. And, the NYWC exhibit hall is packed with tools and resources that could help you in ministry (and usually lots of great freebies).

WILL THERE BE OPPORTUNITIES TO INTERACT WITH OTHER YOUTH WORKERS AND/OR HANG WITH MY TEAM?

If you come to NYWC alone, you’ll never be lonely. We won’t force you into awkward icebreaker activities that you might make your youth groups participate in. But you’ll find plenty of other fun, crazy, passionate youth workers that you can get to know. If you come to NYWC with your own team, you’ll have space during the weekend to spend time together having fun, debriefing and dreaming.

CAN I VOLUNTEER TO HELP AT NYWC?

Absolutely! We will be looking for a team of full-convention volunteers and a team of check-in volunteers.  Click here for info about what we’re looking for, and to access the NYWC Volunteer application forms.

DOES MY REGISTRATION INCLUDE FOOD AND LODGING?

No. Food and lodging is not included. We work hard to get deals with hotels near each convention location. Feel free to take advantage of that special pricing or find another place that fits you better. We also work hard to make sure there are many dining options available within walking distance of the convention. Check out this year’s partner hotels!

WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY?

Cancellations up to 30 days prior to the event are subject to a $75 per person non-refundable cancellation fee. Cancellations within 30 days of the event, or a “no-show,” will result in the forfeiture of the full payment.

CAN MY STUDENT LEADERS COME AS WELL?

NYWC is structured to focus entirely on youth workers, which includes full-time staff, ministry assistants, volunteers, interns and leadership. It’s a time to get away, hang out, relax and get some teaching and training that will help you minister more effectively to your teens. The subject matter has been developed specifically for adults, so we recommend attendees be at least college age.

MY SPOUSE AND CHILDREN ARE COMING. CAN THEY JOIN ME IN THE BIG ROOM SESSIONS?

YS loves youth workers and their families! The Big Room however, is designed for adults, not children. With that in mind, we have a nearby family room with a video feed from the Big Room. There are comfy chairs and a big screen TV—it’s a great place for you and your kids.

HOW CAN I EXHIBIT AT NYWC?

You can get all the details about exhibiting at NYWC here. We have plenty of opportunities for exhibiting, sponsoring and more.

WHERE WILL NYWC BE HELD NEXT YEAR?

NYWC 2018 will be held in St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 15-18, 2018.
